Who are Soroptimists?

We are a group of professional and business women,
from all walks of life - who come together to give service in our community
The service operates on a number of levels -

at Club level to provide support and friendship for members;

at Local level to serve the community where the club is based

at Region or Country level where clubs join together to serve

a much larger community:

 at Federation level where clubs in many countries join together in

addressing larger issues;

at International level where all soroptimist clubs in the world strive for

Human Rights for all, Equality, Development and Peace through

International Goodwill and Understanding and Friendship

Chartered in 1947 the Leigh club is part of the South Lancashire Region of S.I.G.B.I. (Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland) Federation, which encompasses 30 countries. S.I. Bolton and S.I. Wigan are our Mother Clubs.
What does Soroptimist mean?
The word Soroptimist is derived from the Latin 'soros' meaning 'sister' and 'optima' meaning 'best', we interpret 'soroptimist' as 'the best of women'.
Soroptimists work to promote social justice and equality and the empowerment of women through economic independence and greater participation in decision making at all levels of society with club, regional, federation and international service projects.
We meet at Leigh Cricket Club, Beech Walk, Leigh, on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month.
Soroptimist International is about women from all walks of life, working together to make a difference.
